Joyceville Medium (also known as JAU) was built in 1959. The facility was originally a Federal medium institution but was changed into an assessment unit in 2012. An assessment unit is where most inmates will spend between 3 to 6 months being evaluated until being sent to the institution where they will serve most of their time (known as their “Mother” institution). In 2014 Joyceville institution was amalgamated with the Pittsburgh Minimum institution raising Joyceville Institution’s capacity to 752 adult male Federal inmates.
